Insecurity in Bollywood: Why Amitabh Bachchan Walked Away from a Film With Kamal Haasan?
Amitabh Bachchan is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, a fact that remains undisputed. His unparalleled screen presence and charisma set him apart, a testament to which can be seen in his recent film, Kalki 2898 AD. In this film, he shares the screen with another legendary actor, Kamal Haasan, who plays the antagonist. This collaboration between two titans of Indian cinema brings to light an interesting anecdote from their past.
During the 1980s, Amitabh Bachchan was at the peak of his career, while Kamal Haasan was just beginning to make a name for himself. According to reports, Bachchan once felt insecure about Haasan potentially overshadowing him. This insecurity surfaced during the making of the film Khabardar, which also starred Sridevi and Jaya Prada, and was directed by T Rama Rao.
The film was nearly halfway completed when Bachchan decided to walk away. Kamal Haasan later revealed that he received only half of his remuneration for the film. The co-director, K Bhagyaraj, disclosed that Bachchan’s departure was due to concerns that Haasan’s character, who was scripted to die, would dominate the narrative, leaving Bachchan’s character in the shadows. Bachchan, protective of his hard-earned reputation, chose to exit the project rather than risk being overshadowed.
Despite his departure, Amitabh Bachchan was considerate of the producers' loss. He offered them bulk dates for the shooting of another film to compensate. Unfortunately, this proposed film never materialized. However, Bachchan and Haasan eventually worked together in the film Geraftar, putting their past differences behind them.
Fast forward to the present, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan have reunited for Kalki 2898 AD, an epic film that showcases their immense talent. In this movie, Haasan plays the main antagonist, while Bachchan portrays the mythological hero, Ashwathama. The film also features Deepika Padukone and Prabhas in significant roles, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience for audiences.
The collaboration of Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in Kalki 2898 AD stands as a testament to their enduring legacy and the remarkable journeys of their illustrious careers.
