Kangana Ranaut's Parliamentary Membership Under Legal Fire? All You Need to Know!
In a development stirring both political and legal circles, a petition has been filed in the Himachal High Court challenging the parliamentary membership of Bollywood actress and BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Kangana Ranaut. The petition, initiated by Layak Ram Negi, seeks to annul Kangana's election to the Lok Sabha and has prompted the court to issue a notice to the actress, demanding a response by August 21.

Layak Ram Negi, a former employee of the Forest Department who retired early under voluntary retirement schemes (VRS), has contested the validity of Kangana Ranaut’s election. Negi asserts that his nomination was improperly dismissed by the election officer during the Mandi constituency elections, which he claims affected his chances of contesting the election. According to Negi, his nomination was rejected due to issues related to "No Due Certificates" for utilities such as electricity, water, and telephone services. Although he was granted additional time to produce these certificates, they were reportedly rejected upon submission, leading to his disqualification.
Negi argues that had his nomination been accepted, he would have secured victory. He has requested the court to annul Kangana's election and to mandate a re-election for the Mandi seat.

The legal challenge comes at a time when Kangana Ranaut is making headlines for her debut in Parliament. Having won the Lok Sabha elections from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, with a decisive margin of 74,755 votes against Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh, Kangana recently made her inaugural address in Parliament. Her victory margin was substantial, with Dr. Prakash Chandra Bhardwaj of the Bahujan Samaj Party trailing in third place with 4,393 votes.
On July 25, 2024, Kangana Ranaut delivered her first speech as an MP, focusing on the preservation of Himachal Pradesh’s art and folk music. In her address, she raised concerns about the decline of traditional art forms and folk music in her constituency. Emphasizing the cultural richness of the Mandi region, Kangana urged for measures to safeguard the traditional techniques and music that are at risk of vanishing.
