Rajpal Yadav sentenced to 3 months in Jail in Seven Cheque Bounce Cases, Delhi HC upholds conviction
The Delhi High Court on Friday, July 10, 2026, upheld actor Rajpal Yadav's conviction in seven cheque bounce cases. The court sentenced him to three months of simple imprisonment in each of the seven cases. However, the sentence has been suspended for two months, allowing the actor to approach a higher court if he wishes to challenge the order.
Why the Case Was Filed
The case goes back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav borrowed ₹5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his film Ata Pata Laapata. According to the case, several cheques issued by the actor were dishonoured, leading the company to file seven cheque bounce complaints against him.
What the Court Ordered
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma directed Rajpal Yadav to pay ₹1.05 crore to the complainant in each of the seven cases. The court also ordered him to pay ₹25,000 to the State. It clarified that the ₹2.25 crore already paid by the actor will be adjusted while calculating the final amount payable. In addition, Radha Yadav, the actor's wife, has been directed to pay ₹5.51 lakh to the complainant in each of the seven cases.
Court's Observations
The High Court observed that Rajpal Yadav had been given several opportunities over the past few months to settle the dispute. The court noted that the actor and his senior counsel repeatedly assured that the payment would be made and sought adjournments to arrange the funds. Since the promised settlement did not take place, the court decided to uphold the conviction and modify the sentence.
Previous Jail Stay
Earlier in February 2026, Rajpal Yadav spent 10 days in Tihar Jail in connection with the same cheque bounce case before being granted bail. After his release, his lawyer claimed that the total liability on the original ₹5 crore loan had increased to ₹10.40 crore. The lawyer also alleged that the complainant refused to accept the security amount offered and wanted the actor to serve time in jail.
What Happens Next
The Delhi High Court has granted Rajpal Yadav two months to seek legal remedies before an appellate court. Until then, the operation of his three-month jail sentence will remain suspended.
