Health Alert: The Alarming Rise of 'Saree Cancer', All You Need to Know!

The saree, a quintessential garment in Indian culture, transcends mere fashion to symbolize tradition, elegance, and grace. Adorning women in various social settings such as parties, functions, festivals, and religious ceremonies, its allure is undeniable. However, the influence of the saree extends far beyond the borders of India, with its diverse styles now embraced worldwide.

The Unexpected Dangers of Saree Fashion

Innovative draping techniques have modernized saree-wearing, allowing for creative expressions of style and identity. Yet, amidst this celebration of cultural attire, a concerning revelation has surfaced – an elevated cancer risk associated with saree-wearing, a phenomenon colloquially termed "saree cancer".

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) cancer, a rapidly proliferating condition among Indian women, is linked to the traditional method of tying the saree around the waist. Dr. Sudip, a cancer specialist from ASCIPM Medical College and Hospital, emphasized in a report by Only My Health, that women in Indian rural areas habitually wear sarees year-round. The friction caused by the cotton threads of the petticoat against the waist leaves discernible imprints, which over time may escalate into skin cancer. Regions like Bihar and Jharkhand, where saree-wearing is prevalent and exposure to excessive heat is common, witness a swift spread of this ailment.

Saree Chic or Saree Risk?

However, sarees are not the sole culprits. Other traditional clothing practices, such as wearing Kashmiri Kangri clothes and tight jeans, also pose risks of serious illnesses. In Kashmir, the practice of carrying the Kangri, a traditional firepot, close to the body elevates skin temperature, increasing the risk of skin cancer. Additionally, snug-fitting jeans exacerbate the likelihood of developing severe illnesses like cancer and can cause discomfort to intimate areas.

To combat these risks and safeguard health, preventive measures are imperative. Adopting a balanced diet rich in nutrients and leading an active lifestyle through regular physical activity are crucial steps. Avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity can significantly reduce the risk of developing serious conditions like cancer. By prioritizing health and well-being, individuals can mitigate the adverse effects of traditional clothing practices and ensure a healthier future
