Punjab Mail: Here Are Some Unknown Facts About BR Chopra

In the next episode of Punjab Mail, the audience will get to know some interesting facts about the director and producer of Bollywood movies and television serials, BR Chopra. The show will air on PTC Punjabi on June 11 at 2:30 PM.

Here are some lesser known facts about him:

Born in undivided Punjab in 1914, BR Chopra’s full name is Baldev Raj Chopra.

Chopra received an M.A. in English literature from University of the Punjab in Lahore. He started his career in 1944 as a film journalist with Cine Herald, a film-monthly published in Lahore.

After Partition, he moved to Mumbai and made his foray into films as a director.

His family put all their savings into his first film Karwat (1949), which unfortunately bombed at the box office.

His first film as a director, Afsana, was released in 1951

He formed his own production house after his 1954 movie Chandni Chowk became the blockbuster hit.

He then directed some blockbuster films like Naya Daur (1957), Sadhna (1958), Kanoon (1961), Gumrah (1963), Humraaz (1967) and Awam (1987).

Besides films, he also directed TV series, Mahabharat in the late 1980s

B.R. Chopra passed away at the age of 94 in 2008.
