Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who just celebrated 25 years in the industry, has announced that his new series, Heeramandi, will be produced in collaboration with Netflix. The series will look into the lives of courtesans, as well as the hidden cultural reality of Heeramandi, a district in Lahore in pre-independence India.
The show will include all of the trademarks of a Bhansali film, including lavish sets, intricate compositions, and diverse characters. The stories of love, treachery, politics, and succession are all about to be told in Heeramandi.
Bhansali, who started his career with Khamoshi, has established a name for himself with films such as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Guzaarish, Goliyon Ke Rasleela: Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, and Padmaavat.
“We are happy to announce that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi IS COMING TO NETFLIX. Words aren't enough to explain how excited we are that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is partnering with us for this epic Netflix Original series, but these emojis come pretty close,” Netflix India wrote on Instagram.
“Heeramandi is an important milestone in my journey as a filmmaker,” Sanjay Leela Bhansali said when asked about the film. "The courtesans of Lahore are the centerpiece of this epic, first-of-its-kind series. It's a big, magnificent, all-encompassing series, so I'm both nervous and delighted to start working on it. I'm excited for my collaboration with Netflix and the opportunity to bring Heeramandi to a broader audience" Bhansali further added.
