Why World Autism Awareness Day 2024 is More Important Than Ever
Every April 2nd, people worldwide come together to observe World Autism Awareness Day. This day serves as a platform to deepen our understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to foster environments that support the integration and well-being of individuals affected by it. Rooted in a UN resolution dating back to 2007, the significance of this day cannot be overstated, particularly in light of recent studies revealing alarming prevalence rates.
According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics in 2021, autism affects approximately one in every 68 children in India, with boys being three times more susceptible than girls. The origins of World Autism Awareness Day can be traced back to a pivotal UN resolution passed on November 1, 2007. This resolution aimed to improve the quality of life for individuals with autism and emphasized the importance of raising awareness to facilitate their integration into society. Subsequently, on December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly officially adopted this resolution, establishing April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day.
