Aamir Khan-Gauri Spratt wedding: Reports of Fatwa draw attention online
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan recently married his longtime partner, Gauri Spratt, in a private registered ceremony attended by close family and friends. The couple chose to keep the wedding simple instead of having a big celebrity celebration. Soon after the wedding, it became one of the most talked-about topics on social media and in the news.
Why the Wedding Became a Topic of Debate
The wedding attracted attention because Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt belong to different religions. Their interfaith marriage started discussions online, with people sharing different opinions. While many people congratulated the couple and supported their decision, others criticised the marriage and questioned interfaith relationships. Some political leaders and religious groups also commented on the issue, making the debate even bigger.
Religious Objections After the Wedding
After Aamir Khan's wedding to Gauri Spratt, some media reports claimed that a fatwa was issued against the actor by Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta. According to ANI, the religious ruling was issued because Gauri is not a Muslim.
As per Maulana Ibrahim Hussain's interpretation of Islamic law (Sharia), a Muslim man should not marry a non-Muslim woman unless she accepts Islam. In a video shared online, he described such interfaith marriages as forbidden and called them a "sin." He also stated that people who do not consider such actions sinful would be answerable to Allah.
The Maulana also criticised the idea of marrying multiple times. He said that a person should only marry again if they are able to fulfil all the responsibilities that come with marriage. Referring to Aamir Khan, he mentioned that the actor had entered into a third marriage with a non-Muslim woman and noted that the marriage had led to protests from some sections of society.
Aamir Khan's Response
Aamir Khan responded to the criticism by saying that religion has never been a deciding factor in his personal relationships. He explained that all his marriages have been registered civil marriages and that none of his wives changed their religion after marriage. According to Aamir, his family believes in respecting every religion and giving people the freedom to make their own personal choices.
Different Views on Interfaith Marriage
The discussion around Aamir Khan's marriage has once again brought attention to interfaith marriages in India. Some people believe that adults have the right to choose their life partner, no matter what religion they follow. Others feel that marriages between people of different faiths can lead to social and cultural challenges. These different opinions often lead to public debates whenever a well-known celebrity enters an interfaith marriage.
Personal Choice
Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt have chosen to focus on their new life together despite the public discussion. Their wedding has highlighted how celebrity marriages can quickly become topics of national conversation. While opinions remain divided, the couple's marriage has also reminded many people that marriage is a personal decision and that respect for individual choice remains an important part of a democratic society.
