About Nargis Dutt

Nargis began her acting career at the age of five with a minor role in "Talash-E-Haq" (1935). Her career took off with the film "Tamanna" in 1942. Her final role was in the psychological thriller "Raat Aur Din."

Nargis and actor Sunil Dutt fell in love after he rescued her from a fire on the set of their 1957 film "Mother India." They grew closer while recovering from their injuries and married on March 11, 1958. Nargis's portrayal of Radha in "Mother India" earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress and an Academy Award nomination.

After marrying Sunil, Nargis left her acting career to focus on her family. She and Sunil formed the Ajanta Arts Culture Troupe, which performed stage shows for soldiers in border areas.

In the early 1970s, Nargis became the first patron of The Spastic Society of India, earning recognition for her social work and a Rajya Sabha nomination in 1980. She was the second actor, after Prithviraj Kapoor, to be nominated and served in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1981. In 1958, she was awarded the Padma Shri.

Nargis passed away on May 3, 1981, at the age of 51, after battling pancreatic cancer. Her legacy continues to inspire many, and Sanjay Dutt's tribute highlights the enduring love and admiration he holds for his mother.
