Mahavir Jayanti Special: The Jain Way of Life, Finding Balance and its Relevance in Modern Times

Mahavir Jayanti, which falls on 4th April 2023, is a significant day for the Jain community worldwide, as it marks the birth anniversary of the last Tirthankara of Jainism, Lord Mahavir. He was a spiritual leader who lived in ancient India and taught the path of non-violence, compassion, and self-realization.

Jainism is one of the oldest religions in the world and has a unique philosophy that emphasizes the importance of finding balance in every aspect of life. In this article, we will discuss the Jain way of life and its relevance in modern times.

The Jain Way of Life: The Five Principles

Jainism is based on the concept of Ahimsa, which means non-violence in thought, speech, and action. Jains believe that all living beings, whether humans or animals, have a soul and should be treated with respect and compassion. The Jain way of life is guided by five principles, known as the Five Vows or Mahavratas:

  1. Ahimsa (Non-Violence) - This vow emphasizes the importance of avoiding any harm to any living being, including oneself. It includes physical, verbal, and mental violence.

  1. Satya (Truthfulness) - This vow emphasizes the importance of speaking the truth and living a life of integrity. It includes avoiding falsehood, deception, and dishonesty.

  1. Asteya (Non-Stealing) - This vow emphasizes the importance of not taking what belongs to others without their consent. It includes avoiding theft, embezzlement, and cheating.

  1. Brahmacharya (Chastity) - This vow emphasizes the importance of controlling one's desires and leading a life of celibacy or faithfulness to one's partner.

  1. Aparigraha (Non-Possessiveness) - This vow emphasizes the importance of letting go of material possessions and living a simple life. It includes avoiding greed, attachment, and hoarding.

Finding Balance in Jainism

Jainism teaches that finding balance is the key to living a happy and fulfilling life. It emphasizes the importance of balancing our physical, mental, and spiritual needs. Jains believe that the ultimate goal of life is to achieve self-realization and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Jains follow a vegetarian diet, as they believe that killing animals for food is a form of violence. They also practice fasting and meditation to purify their mind and body. Jains believe that by controlling their senses, emotions, and desires, they can achieve inner peace and happiness.

Relevance of Jainism in Modern Times

Jainism has a lot of relevance in modern times, as it provides a holistic approach to life. The principles of Jainism, such as non-violence, truthfulness, and simplicity, are becoming increasingly relevant in a world that is plagued by conflict, dishonesty, and materialism.

Jains believe that by following these principles, they can create a better world for themselves and others. Jainism also emphasises the importance of sustainability and environmental protection. Jains believe that all living beings are interconnected and that harming one can harm the entire ecosystem. They advocate for a sustainable lifestyle and are actively involved in environmental conservation activities.

On the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, we can learn a lot from the above teachings of Jainism. We can create a more harmonious and sustainable world by following the principles of non-violence, truthfulness, simplicity, and compassion. We can also find inner peace and happiness by finding balance in our physical, mental, and spiritual lives.
