Imtiaz Ali reveals his reason for making 'Jab Harry Met Sejal'; Here's why the director created the 'non-intellectual' film on purpose?

Imtiaz Ali is one of the finest filmmaker of the Bollywood industry. The man has contributed in serving some of the most critically acclaimed cinematic masterpieces into the Hindi film industry, from superhit rom-com Jab We Met to romantic drama Tamasha, he has aced his creative caliber and paved his own way into the catalogue as one of the most prolific directors of his time. When we see through his list of movies ever created, we also come across 'Jab Harry Met Sejal', a 2017 rom-com which neither served well critically nor commercially.

Imtiaz Ali calls the movie 'Non-Intellectual'

During a latest interview, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has talked about his 2017 movie 'Jab Harry Met Sejal' and unveiled the reasons for making such a failure movie into his accolades worthy career. According to Mr. Ali, it was all intentional and so he wanted to bring an 'ordinary' film among the fanatics as he was started getting called as an 'intellectual' director following his fine work done in movie 'Tamasha'. During the conversation Imtiaz threw light on how his viewer's interests shifted ever since Tamasha. He quoted, "After Tamasha, people started taking me very seriously. There was this idea that, ‘Tujhe nahi samajh aayi Tamasha kyunki tu akalmand nahi hai, I felt like My film is being discussed in a club where I wouldn’t find admittance, and I didn't want to be that kind of director. So, I decided to make a movie that's not at all intellectual."

The filmmaker made the unsuccessful movie on purpose?

As Jab Harry Met Sejal did not bring any goodness in his career, he called off the entire creation as an bare 'ordinary'. Saying the same, the director further added and said "I wanted to make an ordinary film. Every film that you make, you are attached to it, but I wanted to make Jab Harry Met Sejal during that time because I wanted to make a film jisme koi dimaag nahi lagao, matlab, 'Yeh picture bhi bana sakta hai Imtiaz Ali jisne Tamasha banayi'. I felt it could have been a fresh concept, and I could’ve have done better. However, in hindsight, I could have improved many things in my work."

About 'Jab Harry Met Sejal'

Speaking about 'Jab Harry Met Sejal', it is a 2017 romantic comedy written and directed by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Gauri Khan, the movie stars Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma in the leading roles. By following the movie's storyline, most of the scenes were shot in places like Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam, Vienna and Lisbon.
